Walter Meyer
Chief Walter Meyer has resided in the Coachella Valley for the past 35 years. He is a graduate of Palm Springs High School and completed
his college education at College of the Desert and Chapman University in Palm Desert. He and his wife Rhonda have two children, Brittany and Mathew, and the entire family enjoys wakeboarding and boating on the Colorado River. Chief Meyer also enjoys teaching and is currently an instructor for the College of the Desert and Riverside Community
College. He teaches classes in Administration of Justice and is an instructor for the modular law enforcement academies at both institutions.
Chief Meyer has worked in law enforcement since 1983 where he began his career with the
Palm Springs Police Department as a Reserve Police Officer and Community Service Officer. He was later hired as a full-time Police Officer with the Desert Hot Springs Police Department where he worked various assignments including patrol, investigations, SWAT, Field Training Officer and Traffic. He was later promoted to the rank of Sergeant and supervised the narcotics unit.
In 1990, the Desert Hot Springs Police Department was absorbed by the Riverside County
Sheriff ’s Department. Chief Meyer worked as a Sheriff ’s Investigator at the Palm Desert Station and the Special Investigations Bureau. His duties included the investigation of homicides, sex crimes, property crimes and narcotics (specializing in clandestine laboratories). He was also assigned to the DEA Clan Lab Task Force.
In 1998, Chief Meyer was promoted to Sheriff ’s Sergeant and assigned to the Jurupa Valley Station. He worked as a Patrol Watch Commander and was later assigned as the Community Action Team supervisor. In 2001, Chief Meyer was promoted to Sheriff ’s Lieutenant and transferred to the Indio Sheriff ’s Station. This assignment included the supervision of the Indio Station’s Administration section and the contract cities of La Quinta and Coachella. Additional duties included Acting Station Commander and the Sheriff ’s Disaster Response Team.
Chief Meyer was later transferred to the Cabazon Sheriff ’s Station where he supervised all Station functions including Patrol, Investigations, Administration and the contract City of Calimesa. In January of this year, Chief Meyer was promoted to Sheriff ’s Captain and assigned to command the Indio Sheriff ’s Station. His duties include the honor of serving as the Chief of Police.
Chief Meyer has a Bachelor of Arts with honors in Criminal Justice and a Master of Arts in Criminal Justice with an emphasis on the administration of criminal justice systems.
